PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. WHY DO IT?
Despite the fact that the benefits of regular physical activity are well known, it is still a small percentage of people who follow a regular exercise programme.
Many people, who go to gyms and sport clubs, do so thinking of the 'visible' benefits that exercise brings: better body shape, weight loss, etc. However the 'invisible' effects of physical activity are much more important. These range from cardiovascular improvements to physical wellbeing, about which more is mentioned overleaf.
Fitness instructors see people who pass fleetingly by the gym at certain times of the year. These people want to see fast results. But you don't sort your health out in three months - it's an on-going, regular process.
Not all aerobic activity has to take place in the gym. Walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and many other sports can be done outside in the fresh air. However, it is important to be monitored and supervised by the right people. The best way is to safely build up your heart rate.
For those who want to go for a more intense workout, there are activities such as Aerobics, Step, Spinning (Static bike classes), Aerobox, etc.
There are options for all age groups, from the very young, who can do aerobic exercise by way of a fun game, to older people, for whom the intensity and variety of movements is appropriate. .
DIET AND EXERCISE
There are basically two factors involved in weight control: Food intake and exercise. For many people, just going on slimming diets means that they loose body fat. But this almost always results in fast weight gain once the dieting ends. Those who stick to a strict food regime throughout their lives avoid gaining weight, but they are deprived of the benefits they would get from an exercise programme.
Physical activity controls and sustains a healthy cardiovascular system and can help to reduce cholesterol levels, thus drastically reducing the risk of coronary hear disease. It also prevents arterial hypertension, while increasing lung capacity.
Muscles and joints are kept in healthy working order, thus holding back the effects of aging. For this reason, it is in the interests of those of all ages, including older people, to exercise. It has been proved that those who engage in physical exercise throughout their lives live longer and enjoy better physical and mental health than those who do not.
Physical activity helps to create energy and therefore gives a feeling of wellbeing. It has been noted that almost all problems related to anxiety, especially cases of depression, improve when sport or physical exercise is taken up. This in turn reduces the need for many psychoactive drugs.
In conclusion, exercise is not only important for weight control, since it burns calories, but it is also the gateway to a better quality of life.
